Dweezil! These are sooo damn enjoyable. I loved Jennifer Batten's take on EVH and 1984. Her last story about Blue Samba/Mean Street brought a literal tear to my eye. Being that the 5150 album is up next, I have a theory that I'm hoping you consider putting to the test. I theorize that Good Enough and Yankee Rose are the same friggin' song. Is it possible that VH with Dave had started to work on that tune, but after the split they both did versions of it? I've never synced it up, but DLR's Yankee Rose seems to fit perfectly over the Good Enough instrumental. What thinks ye?

Hi Dweezil,

Thanks again for all your fantastic work I really loved all the episodes and can't wait to hear RWTD/Right Here Right Now.

Do you know if Wolfgang listened to RWTD?

Greetz from the Netherlands,

Jurre

Dweezil

Hi Jurre,

Thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying the episodes. I have not heard anything from Wolfgang. It would be great to have him as a guest at some point! Best, DZ

Fellow “Halenites”, in case you haven’t already seen this, it’s pretty cool. You can never have enough VH:

Hi DZ,

Thank you for doing this, it is awesome!

If I am subscribed to the Early Years package, is there an archived audio or video file of the listening party? I was out of town and would like to hear it.

Unless I am mistaken, the email I received said there would be one, though I cannot find it. Thanks! James

Dweezil

Hi James,

You should see the archived video here: https://newdweezil.rewardmusic.com/videos

Please let me know if you're able to access it. Best, DZ

Found it under the LATEST/EVENTS tabs. Cool Episode!

Thank You!!

Oops. It was under Latest/Videos tabs

The superimposed EVH Holdsworth lines in Hot For Teacher proves both are from another planet. Love the research and detail that went into this episode! Thanks Dweezil.

Dweezil's assessment of Girl Gone Bad... "this track might arguably display Van Halen's musicianship better than any song in their catalog" is 1000% SPOT ON!  I've always thought this and am happy to hear someone else verbalize it.  This song is a HURRICANE.  Long live the Mighty Van Halen.

I fully agree.  (I even like reading someone acknowledging what Dweezil acknowledged).

Girl Gone Bad RULES!!!!

1984 was like a brand new Van Halen to me (but was still Van Halen for sure) and then 5150 was a third brand new Van Halen, each one as exciting to me exciting and stunning and inspiring. Jennifer is a fantastic guest and for her to note that a: they were a loud ass band and that Edward was pulling off all this amazing stuff with that great smile, which was part of him making you feel you were a part of the experience are two critical things about the phenomenon of Van Halen. She is so smart in her commentary. Edward’s solos, I thought even as a 11 year old violin student, those all had these really flowing but “angular” stand alone parts with this feeling like they are separate but complimentary and the way he starts and wraps each one up is like a wake up call to stay with the tune. It’s skewed from the main melody but drags you in. Incredible. Jennifer is the best guest you have had!

1984, I live in Cape Coral Florida. I call 107 wooj fm radio station at 12 years old. I ask the rock station to play a request. The DJ recognizes my voice is one of a child and he says “what do you want to hear “ as though I am a bill collector. “Could you please play top jimmy or I’ll Wait for me?” He says “yea don’t hold your breath kid.” and hangs up. I wanted the world to know how great the songs other than “jump” were. After he hung up on me I thought, well, I know how awesome these songs are, and your a dick. True story.

I'm f*****g dying over here episode 10 is killing me slowly!

While we’re eagerly waiting on the next podcast, I came across this video which can tied over for a little while. The interview with Steve Stevens was great:

Love this Dweezil ty.  Just wondering when the last episode will air?

Hey Dweezil, thought you might enjoy this. A few days before I listened to episodes 4 and 5 with Blues Saraceno, an interview of Eddie with Steve Rosen from 1980 popped up on Youtube . About 10 minutes in, Steve asked him if he used the Strat on Women and Children. Eddie said, yes, but "I played the 335 on the solo to 'Cradle.'" He also said, he intentionally didn't go crazy with the whammy bar on the record. Love the podcast! Thanks.

Dweezil

Great info! Thanks. Now, I wonder if he played the 335 on So This Is Love. I bet he did!

Any chance talking to Sammy, Dave, Mike and Wolfy?  It would be pretty sweet hearing from them.

And Alex! Sorry!

Dweezil

Hi Jeff,

I would love to talk with all of them! Hopefully it will happen at some point!

DZ

What a fantastic podcast!  So many of my favorite players sharing their love and respect for EVH.  Thank you!!

It's eerie how similar 'experiencing"  Van Halen was for all of us.  1984 was my first concert and it literally changed my life.

Listening to Blues describe his experience at that same concert at the same age (he's two months older than me) was exactly what I felt.

It really takes me back to that magical time.  Glad have skipped the paper bag experience though!  So funny =)

One thing that hit me when going back to Fair Warning is that starting around 25 years later tons of French electro artists like Daft Punk, Justice, DJ Mehdi, Mr Oizo, Alex Gopher,  Yuksek, etc were able to run with EVH’s sonic synth & guitar concepts for decades, just using updated synths and squelchy filters.  That’s millions more parties where Eddie was still moving the crowd, whether he was aware of it or not.

I'm all caught up and am just loving the series! It makes me dig back into the albums and even though I've listened to them a million times, I'm still discovering little gems. How did I not hear the rain on  "Could This Be Magic?!" Duh! One thing that occurred to me-are you going to discuss the 2 songs that DLR sang on for the Warners Best Of-Vol 1, namely "Can't Get This Stuff No More" and "Me Wise Magic?" I think both are cool tracks, have interesting Ed moments and sound a bit different to what came later on ADKOT. Thanks for putting in the time Dweezil.

Dweezil

Hi Rob,

Thanks! Glad you're enjoying the podcast. I will try to work those tracks in somewhere! Lots going on at the moment!!!

Those two tracks off the best of are stunning. Some of Ed's best and most creative playing.

When is new episode coming?

Dweezil

Hi Bill,

I'm still working on it. I went down a few recent research rabbit holes in order to add some extra layers to the episode. I'm sorry for the delay. To make these episodes as good as they deserve to be has been a lot more time consuming than anticipated. I appreciate everyone's patience. Best, DZ

This should be the intro to the 1984 episode.

Mash up between Smokey Robinson and Van Halen.

Dweezil

That one is really good!

When can we here the interview with Jennifer Batten?

Dweezil

Hi Nathan,

I'm still working on Jennifer Batten EP - 10. I'm hoping to have it done by this weekend. 1984 is a pivotal album and I want to make sure the episode incorporates as much important information as it can hold.

RE: 'INTRUDER". Always LOVED that one!!!! The drums, bass and that one fingered keyboard part. Sorry guys...but all I see are strippers dancing to this one.
